Literacy is a critical tool to educate oneself, achieve self-sufficiency, and learn skills and information necessary for employment. Parents who become literate have the powerful opportunity to serve as their children’s first teachers.

With illiteracy and secondary school dropout rates near 50% in Khayelitsha, eKhaya eKasi is committed to supporting the development of both adult and child literacy.

Family Literacy Program

Through partnerships with child care programs, eKhaya eKasi’s founding organization, Art Aids Art, conducts literacy workshops emphasizing the integration of reading and the arts. By utilizing drama, song and movement, learning to read becomes more than an exercise of decoding print on a page. Instead, words are connected to personal stories and everyday life.

Working with teachers, Art Aids Art has facilitated the translation of several dozen English-language children’s books into isiXhosa, the first language of most Khayelitshans. Offering bilingual readings supports literacy in both languages.
